Best Month and Time of Day to Visit the Cueva de Nerja
April to October: the visitor season
These months have the best weather on the Costa del Sol: warm, mostly dry, and predictable. April is green and mild; May–June are warm and busy; July is the driest and hottest; August is crowded and hot; September–October are warm and quieter. The cave stays at 19 °C inside regardless of outside temperature, so summer heat does not bother you below ground.
November to March: fewer tourists, wetter roads
November is the wettest month; roads can be muddy and the visitor track through the cave can have more water underfoot (though it is never flooded). The cave is less crowded, which suits anyone who hates queues. Temperatures outside are mild (12–18 °C), but inside the cave you still want a layer. February and March dry out somewhat. If you want solitude and do not mind wet stairs, November through January is your time.
The slot sell-out problem: summer midday
In July and August, the popular slots (10:00–16:00) sell out 3–7 days ahead. Early morning (9:15, 9:45, 10:15) and late afternoon (16:30 onward) are easier to book. If you are visiting in summer and do not book ahead, walk-up availability can force you into an awkward time or a full-capacity slot. Book online a week ahead if you are coming July–August.
Time of day: morning is quietest
The first paid slot (9:45 or 10:15, depending on season) is quieter than midday. By 14:00–15:00, tour groups fill the cave. The walk is narrow in a few places, so a small group moves faster than a large one. If you want to move at your own pace and hear the audio guide, book early.
